Gianni Veloz (born June 1st, 1999), known professionally as Shinigami (often stylized as shinigami), is an American recording artist from Rochelle Park, New Jersey.[1] He is one of the biggest artists in the emo rap scene. He is known for his song Lite Brite, which has over 500,000 views on YouTube, featured on the talent curating channel Astari,[2] which is known for featuring songs by Lil Peep and XXXTentacion.
Career
Veloz was born in Hackensack, New Jersey. He later grew up in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. He was highly influenced by Skrillex, which made him start making dubstep music under the name Renegade back in 2013.
In 2017, he released his albums Luna and Occam's Razor. His music started gaining a cult following once Lite Brite was featured on the Astari YouTube channel, and the song Nobody, featured on the Sad 悲しい YouTube channel, which has more than 2,000,000 views.[3]
In 2018, he toured with nothing,nowhere, Lil Lotus, and Jay Vee.[4] He also released his third album I Will Never Be a Memory, and his fourth album Grimworld.
In 2019, he released his first EP called Zero.
Musical style
His style consists of lullaby like melodies, mixed with video game inspired and trap flavored production. His lyrical content consists of suicide ideation, depression, and insomnia.
Controversy
In 2017, Shinigami released a song called Grim. Many people speculated that it was a diss track towards Lil Peep for the lyrics:
"Fuck out my face with that pussy ass goth shit
OD on some xannies and die with your goth bitch
You say you're depressed but we know that you're not, kid
Fuck with the Death God, I'll murder your whole clique".
He later stated that it was not directed towards Lil Peep, but it was rather directed towards Yung Goth.
The song was made three months before his passing back in November 15, 2017.
It was later taken down by Shinigami himself saying that he no longer stands by the lyrics of the song, and that it was immature and that it was something he wouldn't make nowadays.[5]
