Shinola, Vol. 2 is the upcoming second rarities compilation album by American rock band Ween. Scheduled for release on November 27, 2026,[1] it is the sequel to the band's 2005 compilation Shinola, Vol. 1.
Background
On July 19, 2005, Ween released Shinola, Vol. 1 through their own Chocodog Records label. The compilation featured 12 previously unreleased demos and outtakes (with edits and overdubs) originating from sessions throughout the band's career. Guitarist Mickey Melchiondo, also known as Dean Ween, subsequently explained that the selections consisted largely of songs the band had regretted excluding from their earlier albums. Despite the title suggesting further installments, Melchiondo expressed reservations about continuing the series, stating in a 2007 interview with The A.V. Club that he was uncomfortable revisiting archival material while the band was still actively recording new music.[2]
Following the release of Shinola, Vol. 1, Ween recorded their ninth studio album La Cucaracha, released in 2007. The album would become the band's final studio release before its breakup in 2012, when singer Aaron Freeman, also known as Gene Ween, announced his departure from the group.[3] During the subsequent hiatus, both Freeman and Melchiondo pursued separate musical projects. The band announced its reunion in November 2015 and returned to live performances in February 2016, although no further studio albums were recorded.
The possibility of a second Shinola compilation resurfaced around the time of the band's reunion. Melchiondo had begun assembling a prospective track listing as early as 2015 and publicly confirmed that Shinola, Vol. 2 was in development in January 2016 through a post on Facebook.[4] Despite this announcement, the project remained unreleased for more than a decade, with no subsequent updates regarding its progress.
On August 29, 2024, Ween announced that they would cease live performances for the foreseeable future, citing Melchiondo's mental health and difficulties associated with touring.[5] In the years surrounding this announcement, the band increasingly emphasized archival releases and reissues of its back catalog. Rhino Records oversaw an expanding series of Ween releases before and after this point. This includes a deluxe edition of Chocolate and Cheese in 2024, various vinyl reissues, the Brown Box CD studio album collection in April 2026, a deluxe edition of 12 Golden Country Greats in July 2026 and the upcoming 14-CD archival live collection Boognish Provides in October 2026.
On October 6, 2026, Rhino officially announced Shinola, Vol. 2 for release on November 27 as part of Record Store Day Black Friday. The announcement was accompanied by a preview of "Kim Smoltz", an outtake from the sessions for the band's 1997 album The Mollusk that had circulated among fans since 2007, appearing on the semi-official demo collection The Mollusk Sessions. The compilation's 21-track selection includes recordings from all periods of the band's history, alongside previously released rarities and the non-album track Skycruiser. A limited edition of 9,200 double-LP copies, pressed on brown vinyl, was announced for participating independent record stores, alongside a CD edition available through general retailers.
Track origins
- "Kim Smoltz" is an outtake from The Mollusk, recorded during the original 1995 beach house sessions. It subsequently evolved into the instrumental album track "Pink Eye on My Leg".
- "Young Chou Lin" is a studio outtake from the Chocolate and Cheese sessions, sometimes circulating under the title "Pass the Bong".
- "Britney" was recorded in 2006 or 2007 for La Cucaracha. It is also known as "Stargirl".
- "She Caught My Fancy" was originally recorded in 1998 during early sessions for White Pepper, though was also in contention for inclusion on Quebec, appearing on the officially released Caesar demos recorded in 2001 and released in 2011.[6]
- "Essex Plaza" is a recording from the Pure Guava era, recorded in 1991.
- "Kite Flying Man" was recorded in 2006 or 2007 for La Cucaracha.
- "Makin' Love in the Gravy" is a song recorded in 1998 that originally appeared on the limited internet release Craters of the Sac.
- "Planet Fantasy (Horsefly)" was recorded in 1991 for The Pod, circulating for years on the Bilboa demo tape under the title "Fantasy Jam".
- "Ooh Vah Lah (Sludge Version)" is the demo version of a song that appeared on the Japanese version of Quebec, originally recorded in 2001 and found on the 2011 demo compilation Caesar.
- "Hello Johnny" was originally written and recorded during the Chocolate and Cheese sessions. It was re-recorded in 1998 for White Pepper and this recording was subsequently revived in 2001 as found on the Caesar demo compilation for Quebec.
- "I Wuz Nothing" was recorded in 1991 for The Pod and is found on the circulating Bilboa demo tape.
- "Opus Fugue Trilogy" is a multi-part suite originally recorded for Ween's 1988 tape Ween II: Axis: Bold As Boognish. An alternate version was recorded during the GodWeenSatan: The Oneness album. It is currently unknown which version is used on this compilation.
- "The Argus, Pt. 2" was recorded around 1997 presumably for The Mollusk. The title is a misnomer because it was written and recorded before The Argus, which appears on and was written for Quebec.
- "For So Long" was originally recorded in 1997 for The Mollusk. Another circulating version was recorded in 1998 for White Pepper, appearing on the stolen bootleg The Long Beach Island Tape. It is currently unknown which version is used on this compilation.
- "Skycruiser" is a non-album track that was previously released as a standalone single in 1993 on Sub Pop Records. The b-side contained a remix titled "Cruise Control".
- "Put Your Boobs On" was recorded for White Pepper and appears on the stolen bootleg The Long Beach Island Tape.
- "The Chancy Boys" was one of the few songs recorded after La Cucaracha, likely stemming from 2008.
- "Shalom Absalom"'s recording date is unknown, but it was likely recorded in 1991 for Pure Guava.
- "You Can Go Shit in Your Hat (Matt)" is a Quebec demo originally recorded in 2001 and found on the 2011 demo compilation Caesar.
- "Weed Whore" was recorded in 1991 for The Pod and is found on the circulating Bilboa demo tape.
- "The Belvodine" was recorded for White Pepper and appears on the stolen bootleg The Long Beach Island Tape.
