Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe was founded in 1988 by Liao Chiung-chih, the designated preserver of Taiwanese opera as an important traditional art of the Ministry of Culture. In 1991, the troupe was registered in Taipei. Currently, Shintrun is a subsidiary of Liao Chiung-chih Taiwanese Opera Foundation for Culture and Education.

History

In 1988, Liao Chiung-chih founded the Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe with the students she taught at workshops and colleges, soon after she was recognized with the National Arts Heritage Award of Ministry of Education. The troupe was registered in 1991 and since then has been an active promoter of the art of Taiwanese opera.[1]

In 2000, Liao handed the management to her students, however, most of whom had jobs and didn't have much time for theatre.[2]:40 To bridge the gap, Liao turned the troupe into an incubator to develop young artists and professional workers. In 2018, Shintrun was incorporated into the Liao Chiung-chih Taiwanese Opera Foundation for Culture and Education, with Chang Meng-yi as the leader. In 2021, Chang served as the art director. Currently, Liao is the leader and art director.[1][3][4]

Purpose and Goal

Shintrun has been dedicated to the transmission of traditional singing and dancing of Taiwanese opera. Its repertoire includes both reproductions and originals as a way to expand the possibilities of Taiwanese opera.[5]

Shintrun is also active in teaching and promotion and has held a variety of workshops to make this beautiful art known to more people.[1]

Works

From 1991 to 1995, Shintrun staged "Shanbo and Yingtai," "Shixiji" and "Chensan and Wuniang," all of which are popular traditional pieces of Taiwanese opera. Between 1996 and 2010, the amateur troupe turned to adapting or rearranging classics. From 2012 and on, Shintrun has introduced several adaptations and original plays, including "Battle of the Right to Life," "Three Imperial Scholars," "Chen Shi-mei.[2]:39-40[6]
