Showing Styria

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Showing Styria is an Austrian regional exhibition of the province of Styria presented under this name for the first time in 2021. This format is a further development of the Styrian Provincial Exhibitions (1959 to 2006) and the Austrian regional exhibitions (the “Regionalen”, 2008 to 2012).[1]. The exhibition is designed as a biennale and deals with various socially relevant topics with a connection to Styria.

Showing Styria 2021[edit]

The first Showing Styria takes place from April 10 to October 31, 2021. It is organized by the Universalmuseum Joanneum on behalf of the province of Styria and comprises four sub-projects, which are shown at three Graz locations and in a mobile pavilion at other cities of Austria[2]. The show is intended as a comprehensive self-reflection of the province of Styria. The exhibition is designed as a comprehensive self-reflection of the province and is intended to highlight historical developments, social change, visions of the future and artistic positions, which in a common context result in a multi-layered narrative.

The province of Styria invested in it 8.9 million euros[3]

Exhibition themes[edit]

History Museum – how it was[edit]

The Museum of History at Palais Herberstein in downtown Graz focuses on the interplay between a man and nature[4] in its exhibition "how it was - Space and History". The exhibition is divided into twelve parts through all regions of Styria and shows how times and epochs have inscribed themselves into the landscape. The period covered ranges from the early settlement history and Roman traces to the 20th century.

Folk Life Museum – how it is[edit]

The exhibition "how it is. Worlds - Changes - Perspectives" in the Folk Life Museum is dedicated to the current social situation in the province, to the people who live in Styria today or those who are connected with the province. Questions are asked about images of others and of oneself, what life is made of, the environment and society, as well as about how people deal with social or technological upheavals of yesterday and today. Typically Styrian objects, products and (self-)images are meant to make the visitors think about phenomena and developments that are significant for Styria as well as about the meaning of identity[5]

Kunsthaus Graz – what will be[edit]

The exhibition "what will be. Towards the Plurality of Futures" at Kunsthaus Graz tries to sketch possible future scenarios for life in Styria in various areas. Addressed are the topics of structural change in rural areas, logistics, mobility, digitalization, agriculture, circular economy, aging, migration and gender justice. Among other things, the focus is also on technology and artificial intelligence[6]. The exhibition extends from the rooms of the Kunsthaus to the Internet, intertwining physical and virtual spaces[7]

Mobile Pavilion – who we are[edit]

As a mobile exhibit of the Showing Styria exhibition, the mobile pavilion, designed by Alexander Kada makes a stop in Vienna, Hartberg, Spielberg, Schladming and Bad Radkersburg. It has a display area of 800 m2 and a total of 200 m2 of canvas area for 24 works of art.[8] On display is the exhibition "who we are. Art - Diversity - Landscape". The centrepiece is a video room installation with contributions that displays the (cultural) landscapes of the province of Styria. The films were created by young Styrian artists and are intended to stimulate discussion of the regional art and innovation landscape, biodiversity in cultural landscapes, linguistic diversity and cultural exchange.[9]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the pavilion launch in Vienna had to be moved online.[10]
