Showkat Nanda

Showkat Nanda[1] is a photographer and educator based in Kashmir. His work focuses on the conflict in Kashmir and its impact on women and children[2][3]. He is an alumnus of the University of Missouri.

Early life and education[edit]

Nanda was born and brought up in Baramulla, a town in Jammu and Kashmir. He studied science[clarification needed] at Government Degree College, Baramulla and then joined the University of Kashmir from where he received an M.A. in Mass Communication and Journalism.

Nanda worked as a reporter and photographer with local newspapers in Srinagar for several years. He received a Fulbright Fellowship and graduated with an M.A. in photojournalism from the University of Missouri in 2014..[4]

Career[edit]

Nanda did his internship at Agence France Presse (AFP) in Srinagar for one year and contributed to the daily Rising Kashmir for three years. He later worked for Kashmir Life as an assistant editor and then moved to the United States in 2012 where he began studying at the Missouri School of Journalism. In the US, he associated with Pictures of the Year International (POYi)[5].

Nanda contributed to Columbia Missourian and Vox magazine as a staff photographer.[6][7] In 2014, he returned to Jammu and Kashmir and began working as a freelance journalist and photographer. His works have appeared in The New York Times[8][9][10], The Washington Post[11][12], National Geographic[13], The Los Angeles Times[14] National Public Radio (NPR)[15][16], The Guardian[17], Le Monde[18] , VICE[19], World Policy Journal[20][21], Al Jazeera[22], The Caravan[23] among others.[citation needed]

Works[edit]

Aside from his contributions for various international outlets, Nanda's works have appeared in several books. "At the intersection of isolation and otherness": Experiences and identity of American Muslim converts and the effects of media framing after 9/11"[24] is a research paper that is being turned into a book. He is one of the nine contributing photographers whose works have been included in the books Witness Kashmir 1986-2016 / Nine Photographers. The first chapter of Of Occupation and Resistance: Writings from Kashmir, an anthology by Fahad Shah is written by Nanda.

Awards[edit]

In 2011, Nanda won the Picture of the Year, 1st and 3rd prizes at Media Foundation of India National Press Photo contest[25]. He won the Center for Science and Environment CSE Climate Change Photography Award[26] and received "Storytellers of Tomorrow" organized by Eyem and VII Photo Agency, in 2015.[27]

He received the Magnum Foundation's Emergency Fund grant in 2016 and was nominated for the International Photography Grant in 2017.[28][29][30].[31] He scured the second place at The Hindu Photojournalism Awards in the Photo Essay category in 2019 and was honorary mentioned in the Social Documentary Network's ZEKE Award for Documentary Photography.[32][33][34][35]

Nanda received the National Geographic Society Emergency fund grant for journalists in 2020[36] and an Emergency grant from Magnum Foundation and Henry Luce Foundation in 2021.[37][38][39]
