The Sicilian Defence, Classical Variation is a chess opening with the following moves:
- e4 e5
- Nf3 Nc6
- d4 cxd4
- Nxd4 Nf6
- Nc3 Nc6
There is also an alternative move order: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nc3 d6.
The move 6...Nc6 develops another knight to the center of the board.
Main line: 7. Bg5[edit]
White's most common move is 7. Bg5. This move threatens to capture on f6, doubling Black's pawns. Black now plays 7...e6, opening the bishop & preventing doubled pawns. When White captures on f6, Black is often forced to double his pawns because the queen and/or bishop must defend the pawn on d6.
