The Sidekan clashes refers to the clashes between Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that occurred between 9 and 13 December 2020 in the Sidekan area of Erbil Governorate, Iraqi Kurdistan.
Background
The clashes took place during the Kurdistan Region–PKK conflict, an struggle between the PKK and the Kurdistan Regional Government dating back to the 1980s. Tensions had escalated in 2020 due to Turkish military operations in northern Iraq targeting PKK positions and growing disputes over territorial control within the Kurdistan Region.
Clashes
According to multiple reports, the PKK attempted to infiltrate Peshmerga positions near Sidekan. On 9 December, PKK fighters reportedly fired RPGs and Kalashnikovs at a Peshmerga outpost, resulting in the death of a Peshmerga soldier and the injury of another. A PKK fighter was also killed in the skirmish.[1]
Reports from Kurdish news outlets indicated that the PKK had been laying mines and conducting operations in populated areas, prompting Peshmerga responses. The Peshmerga claimed to have neutralized the infiltration attempt and regained control of the area.[2]
Casualties
At least one Peshmerga soldier was killed and several others were wounded during the fighting.[3] One PKK fighter was also reported killed.[1]
Aftermath
The clashes sparked political concern within the Kurdistan Region and among Kurdish groups across the region. Analysts highlighted the risk of internal Kurdish fragmentation, as the conflict between the PKK and the Peshmerga threatened to destabilize Kurdish unity amid external threats from Turkey and other regional actors.[4]
