Sidikat Modupe Osho, also known as Sidi Osho (born August 19th), is a Nigerian academic, and the first Vice-Chancellor of Afe Babalola University.[1][2][3] She is also the President and founder of the Sidi Osho Foundation (SOF).[4][5]
Early life & education
Sidi is from Ijebu Odonselu in Ogun State but was born in Ibadan Oyo state to Alhaji A. A and Alhaja Adedoyin Andu who are both of blessed memory[6]. She attended All Saints Church School, and St. Teresa's College Ibadan for her elementary and secondary education. She later travelled outside Nigeria to the United States of America; at Delta College, she obtained an associate degree in Agriculture, and a Bachelor of Science degree in food science from Michigan State University, USA, in 1980. Two years later, she had her master's degree in Food Processing and Technology from Ohio State University in 1982. Over a decade later, she obtained her doctorate in Food Processing and Technology from the University of Ibadan[6][5]
Career
Sidi Osho's career, which spans over 35 years of experience,[5] started at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan; during her one-year National service program, she worked on the Root and Tuber Improvement program project in 1983 from January to December. Between 1987 and 1990, she was a food technologist Coordinator on the Soybean Utilisation Project Phase 1 at the Institute of Agricultural Research Moor Plantation Ibadan; this was an International Development Research Canada (IDRC) funded project. She continued with phase II of this project between 1990 and 1994.[7][8]
From March 1994 to 1996, she was a doctoral Scientist and food technologist, and she worked on phase III of the same IDRC-funded project, which specialized in Grain legumes. In 2001 Sidi's lecturing started as a senior lecturer at the College of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural Management and Rural Development. Between 2004 and 2007, she was an Associate Professor at the same institution.[9]
From January 2010 to January 2014, Afe Babalola CON, OFR, SAN invited her to be the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Afe Babalola University. She was awarded the 'Best Vice Chancellor of the year in Nigeria by the Association of Vice-chancellors in 2014 and admitted into the African Hall of Fame Award to commemorate the UN International Day in 2015[10]
From March 2014 to February 2015, Professor Sidi Osho was on sabbatical with the National Open University of Nigeria. However, from February 2015 to September 2016, she was on temporary appointment with NOUN until her appointment was regularized in October 2016.[11] In August 2019, Sidi became the special adviser on Higher Education to the Governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun. On the 6th of December 2019, she was nominated Commissioner Ogun state Ministry of Education Science and Technology.[12][13][14]
Sidi is the President/founder of the Sidi Osho foundation, a non-profit, non-faith-based, and non-governmental organization[11]
She also chairs the board of the Food, Agriculture, and National Resources Policy Analysis Network] (FANRPAN). She was elected at a Board of Governors meeting on the 1st of March 2019 in Pretoria. South Africa.[15]
She is also the current World Vice-Chairman of the International Soybean Processing and Utilization in China[6][16]
Controversy
When she was announced as the commissioner of education by Governor Dapo Abiodun, some followers questioned her appointment due to a pronouncement that the university's management sacked her, on April 18, 2016, following the 182nd council meeting on the 8th of March 2016[17][18] The students under the aegis of the National Association of University students issued an ultimatum of two weeks to Governor Abiodun over the alleged scandal which the government promised to look into during its investigation.[19] However, in a voice note to Folake Marcus Bello (former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare Ogun state) Sidi said she was confused when she got wind of a letter circulating on social media concerning her dismissal. She denied knowledge of the acclaimed dismissal letter from the university.[20][21] There was, however, the news that the University was under pressure for a conversion of the dismissal to retirement.[22]
The speaker of the Ogun State lawmakers Mr. Kunle Oluomo, made it known that the screening and approval of her appointment was done in good faith by all the members of the House of Assembly alongside all the other 18 nominees.[23]
