Sidney Callahan is an American psychologist and Catholic feminist who has written widely on religion, women's issues, abortion, and other topics. She is the author of 10 books.

Life and career[edit]

Sidney de Shazo Callahan was born in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 1933 and attended Bryn Mawr College. While her parents were Protestant, Callahan converted to Catholicism during her time at college.[1] She married Daniel Callahan in 1954 and they had six children together. Callahan received he Ph.D. in Psychology from the CUNY Graduate Center in 1979.

Catholic feminist author[edit]

Callahan began writing on women's issues and Catholicism in the 1960s, publishing her first book in 1965, The Illusion of Eve: Modern Women's Quest for Identity,[2] which has been called "the Catholic woman's Feminine Mystique."[3] In 1968, Callahan published Beyond Birth Control: The Christian Experience of Sex.[4] Callahan turned to broader issues affecting women in her 1971 book, The Working Mother.[5] Callahan lectured widely on feminism and Catholicism during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Abortion writings[edit]

During the 1980s and 1990s, Callahan wrote and spoke often on abortion, describing herself as a "pro-life feminist." In 1984, she and her husband Daniel Callahan—who embraced a pro-choice position—co-edited a book, Abortion: Understanding Differences, that included essays from people on all sides of this issue.[6] The couple's longstanding differences on abortion were the subject of a feature in People magazine and they engaged in a number of public debates on abortion, including on PBS's MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour.

In 1986, Callahan published an article in Commonweal, "Abortion and the Sexual Agenda: A Case for Prolife Feminism."[7] The article generated wide discussion, including both praise and criticism.[8]

Psychology and religion[edit]

Callahan has often explored issues of psychology, religion, science, and values in her writing. In 1991, she published In Good Conscience: Reason and Emotions in Moral Decision Making.[9] Her later books include Created for Joy: A Christian View of Suffering (2007)[10] and Called to Happiness: Where Faith and Psychology Meet (2011).[11] She was also a columnist for Commonweal.
