The Conquest of İnegöl also known as Angelokoma took place between Aya Nikola and the Kayı army under the command of Turgut Bey [1]. The war resulted in the conquest of the city and execution of Aya Nikola. This conquest is one of the first conquests in Ottoman History after the Conquest of Kulacahisar. During the conquest, Osman Gazi's older brother Gündüz Bey was martyred and Tekfur Nikola was killed by Turgut Alp [2]. The conquest took place in 1299. This conquest gave way for the Battle Of Dimbos(1302) and the Siege Of Bursa (1326) and the establishment of Ottoman Empire [3]
Prelude
Tensions had been rising between the Tekfur Of Inegol Aya Nikola and Kayi Bey Osman I[4]which resulted in several clashes at Ermenlibeli and the Battle Of Domanic[5], both of which resulted in Kayi victories (though with heavy losses including Osman I's brother Savci Bey and nephew Bayhoca Bey) this caused great anger among the Kayi folk who demanded for Aya Nikola's execution. After Nikola was made Grand Tekfur Of Bithynia he promised to raise a Crusade against the Turks which caused great alarm to Osman I who started planning for the conquest of Inegol [6]
Siege
Osman I ordered for the construction of trebuchets to besiege the fort[7]. Once constructed he besieged the castle either during the end of 1298 or the start of 1299[8].The siege would last for a couple of months which would see relentless bombardment and starvation of the city. However, Aya Nikola the governor of the fort would lead a valiant defence and block the Ottoman Army from storming the fort.Osman Gazi, however gave the command of the siege to Turgut Alp in order to go and besiege Yarhisar[9].Turgut Bey went on to storm the fort, kill most of the garrison and execute Aya Nikola (Osman Gazi also conquered Yarhisar around the same time)
Aftermath
The conquest of Inegol went on to cause the rise of the Kayi Beylik[10] and lead to the establishment of the Ottoman Empire. There was an uproar in Constantinople and the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos declared a war against the Turks.Commander Romanos was sent to attack the Kayi Beylik and defend Yenisehir, however Osman Gazi would successfully conquer Yenisehir[11] and turn it into a capital, thus forming the Ottoman Beylik.
