Mahmoud of Ghazni Rajyapala Surrendered

The Siege of Kannauj in 1018 was a significant military campaign conducted by Mahmud of Ghazni, a formidable ruler of the Ghaznavid Empire, against the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. During this siege, the Gurjar ruler, Rajyapala, eventually surrendered to Mahmud of Ghazni, thereby accepting nominal suzerainty under his rule. This pivotal event marked the decline of the Gurjara dynasty's power. Tragically, in the aftermath of his surrender to Mahmud, Rajyapala met his demise at the hands of the Chandela ruler, Vidhyadara, for capitulating to the Ghaznavid conqueror.[1][2][3][4]

Background[edit]

Mahmoud of Ghazni, the Sultan of Ghaznavid Empire led his expedition to Kannauj, the capital city of Pratihara dynasty in 1018.[5] Rajyapala(also known as Rajapala), the Pratihara King surrendered and fled from the city.[3] Mahmoud looted the city and returned to his capital, Ghazni.[1]

Aftermath[edit]

Rajyapala was killed by the Chandela ruler Vidyadhara due to his disgraceful failure to resist Mahmud.[6]
