Signature Biobank
The Signature Biobank is a Montreal-based biobank designed to systematically collect a broad "signature" of biological, psychosocial and clinical indicators from patients suffering from psychiatric disorders and who are users of the hospital emergency department of the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal (Montreal, Qc, Canada).[1].
Objectives
The Signature Biobank project aims to build bridges between basic and applied research, and between applied and clinical research[2],[3],[4].
Participants
Participant recruitment was initiated in 2012 with people suffering from psychiatric disorders who were able to give their consent[5],[6].
In 2016, a group of so-called control participants, who had not attended a hospital psychiatric service, was also recruited to match the demographic characteristics of the Signature patient cohort[7],[8].
Patients suffering from mental health problems
To date, the Biobanque Signature has recruited 2172 emergency patients with active consent. Longitudinal follow-up of certain patients has been carried out at four critical points in the medical follow-up[1]:
1) admission to the emergency department
2) discharge from hospital
3) first consultation (out-patient visit)
4) at recovery or approximately 1 year after initial recruitment visit (out-patient visit).
The data and biospecimens collected are denominated as soon as they are received at the Biobank. This means that biospecimen data are no longer linked to any personal data that could directly identify the participant.
Control participants
A total of 149 people, without major mental health disorders requiring hospitalization, were recruited on a voluntary basis. Volunteers completed psychosocial questionnaires and donated the same type of biospecimens as the patients recruited from the emergency service.
Type of data and biological material
The Signature Biobank consists of medical, psychosocial and biological data, as well as biological specimens of plasma, serum, hair, blood cells (PBMC) and saliva, collected[1],[9].
Psychosocial data were collected from 24 self-reported questionnaires and medical record data. Biological measurements were also collected.

IL-6; TNF-alpha; sex hormones; ILGF, BDNF, salivary and capillary cortisol, CRP, blood lipid profile, insulin, toxoplasmosis (IgM and IgG).
Access to data and biological material
Data and biological material are made available to national and international researchers, from the academic or private sector, subject to a contribution towards cost recovery, a research ethics board approval and a material transfer agreement[10]
Ethics and governance
The Signature databank and biological materials are the responsibility of CIUSSS-EMTL. The project was approved and endorsed by the Research Ethics Committee of the Institut universitaire en santé mentale (IUSMM) on September 26, 2012, and by the IUSMM Board of Directors on October 23, 2012.[10]
