Signicat AS is a Norwegian technology company headquartered in Trondheim that provides electronic identification, identity verification, authentication and electronic signature services. Its customers are mainly organisations in regulated sectors, such as banks, insurers and public authorities.[1][4] The company was spun off from the Norwegian IT consultancy Kantega in 2007 and has been majority-owned by the private equity firm Nordic Capital since 2019.[1][4]

History

Origins

Signicat originated in the Norwegian IT consultancy Kantega, which began selling an online service for identification and signing with national electronic IDs in 2005.[1] The activity was organised as a subsidiary, Kantega Secure Identity, in 2006. In August 2007 the subsidiary became an independent company under the name Signicat, with Gunnar Nordseth as managing director and offices in Oslo and Trondheim.[1] At the time, the service could identify around 12 million internet users in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.[1]

By early 2019 Signicat had about 115 employees, offices in eight European countries and around 500 customers, including Klarna, Rabobank, Santander and Société Générale.[4]

Nordic Capital ownership

In April 2019 the private equity firm Nordic Capital acquired Signicat from Secure Identity Holding, Viking Venture III and other shareholders. Viking Venture reinvested part of the proceeds and remained a minority owner.[4][5] In January 2020 Asger Hattel, formerly head of Nets Merchant Services, succeeded co-founder Gunnar Nordseth as chief executive officer, and Johan Tjärnberg became chairman of the board.[2] Revenue grew from about €19 million in 2018 to €42 million in 2020.[2][3]

In 2020 the German Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt) certified Signicat as an identification service provider for the German identity card. According to identity-economy.de, it was the first foreign company, and the second company overall after Bundesdruckerei, to receive this certification.[6]

Acquisitions

Since the change of ownership in 2019, Signicat has grown largely through acquisitions of identity and signing companies in other European countries.[7][8]

In July 2019 Signicat acquired the Norwegian identity verification company Idfy,[9] followed in April 2020 by the Dutch digital identity provider Connectis.[10][7] In 2021 it bought the Norwegian mobile authentication company Encap Security from AllClear ID,[3][11] the Spanish video identification company Electronic IDentification in July,[7][12][13] and the Lithuanian e-signature provider Dokobit in August.[7][3]

Further acquisitions included the British fraud prevention company Sphonic in 2022[14] and the Icelandic e-signature company Smartworks in 2024.[15] In July 2025 Signicat acquired the Dutch NFC identity document verification company Inverid from Main Capital.[8]

European Digital Identity Wallet pilots

From 2022 Signicat took part in Large-Scale Pilots launched by the European Commission to test the European Digital Identity Wallet, including the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium (EWC) and the Nordic-Baltic eID Project (NOBID). In 2025 it also joined the WE BUILD and APTITUDE consortia.[16]

Products and services

Signicat provides electronic identification and authentication, identity verification, electronic signatures and digital onboarding services, mainly for banks, insurers and other regulated businesses.[4] Its platform connects to national and bank-issued electronic identity schemes, including Norwegian BankID, Swedish BankID, Danish MitID, Finnish bank IDs (FTN) and Italian SPID. The company has also launched an eID and wallet hub intended to support the EU Digital Identity Wallet under eIDAS 2.0 alongside existing national schemes.[17]

Its identity verification products include document scanning, facial biometrics, video identification and NFC reading of chip-based identity documents. The video and NFC technologies came largely through the acquisitions of Electronic IDentification and Inverid.[13][8] Signicat also offers a workflow tool for know-your-business (KYB) and anti–money laundering (AML) checks.[18] Signicat has been a qualified trust service provider under the EU eIDAS regulation since November 2018.[19]

Dokobit

Dokobit is an electronic signature and document management service founded in Lithuania in 2008. Before Signicat acquired it in August 2021, it also operated in Estonia, Latvia and Iceland, and its chief executive was Gintas Balčiūnas.[7][3] After the acquisition it continued to operate under its own brand as Dokobit by Signicat.[3]

The service is used to sign, seal, validate and manage electronic documents and supports simple, advanced and qualified electronic signatures. Dokobit is listed on the EU trusted list as a qualified trust service provider for the validation of qualified electronic signatures and seals.[20]

Operations

Signicat is headquartered in Trondheim. In 2019 it had offices in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal.[4] Later acquisitions added operations in Spain, Lithuania, Iceland and the United Kingdom, among others.[3][14][15]

Leadership

Co-founder Gunnar Nordseth led Signicat from its establishment as an independent company in 2007.[1] He was succeeded as chief executive officer by Asger Hattel on 8 January 2020 and moved to a business development role. Johan Tjärnberg, former chief executive of Bambora, was appointed chairman of the board at the same time.[2]

Recognition

Signicat was included in the Financial Times FT1000 list of Europe's fastest-growing companies in 2021.[21] In 2025 and 2026 the Financial Times and Statista named Signicat among "Europe's Long-Term Growth Champions", a list of 300 European companies with sustained growth over the previous decade.[22][23] In 2025 the Norwegian magazine Innomag ranked Signicat second in its list of Norway's 25 most innovative companies.[24]
