Sigurður S. Thoroddsen (July 24, 1902 – July 29, 1983) was an Icelandic engineer, politician and soccer player.

Life and work [ edit | edit source code ][edit]

Sigurður was born in Bessastaðir in Álftanes, the son of the politician Skúla Thoroddsen and the poet Theódora Thoroddsen. He graduated from the Reykjavík High School in 1919 and graduated as a civil engineer from the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen in 1927.

In the first years after graduation, he worked as an engineer for various public bodies and taught. In 1931, he founded his own engineering firm, the first general engineering firm in Iceland. Sigurðar Thoroddsen's engineering office was involved in a number of major projects, including in the field of electricity, and many of the largest and most ambitious plans in the field of power plants in Iceland are attributed to Sigurðar, although not all of them were implemented.

Sigurður was inclined to socialism at a young age given his parents' political views. He was elected to Parliament for the Socialist Party in 1942. The parliamentarians did not like him, however, and he retired after one term. Sigurðar's sister, Katrín Thoroddsen , sat in parliament as a deputy for a few weeks in 1945, and the siblings were therefore contemporaneous in parliament.

In his younger years, Sigurður played soccer and became Iceland's champion several times with the Fram soccer club. During his study stay in Denmark, he trained for a while with Akademisk Boldklub, the football team of the University of Copenhagen.

Sigurður was twice married, having eight children, four with each wife, including the poet Dag Sigurðarson, the writer Halldóra Kristína Thoroddsen, the actress Guðbjörga Thoroddsen, and the film director Ásdísi Thoroddsen. He was the grandfather of the current Icelandic prime minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir.

In 1982, Sigurðar's published his memoir, Eins og girn.
