Simon Bull (born March 6, 1958) is an English-born artist living in America.[1] His brightly colorful artworks are inspired by nature[2]and incorporate a wide range of innovative printmaking and painting techniques.[3][4]
Early Years and Education[edit]
Born in Bedfordshire, England, Simon Bull is the second of four children. His father's was an officer in the Royal Army Chaplains' Department of the British Army. Ian Bull's extensive military postings stationed the family in Guyana, Hong Kong, Germany, and Northern Ireland.[5]
Bull attended boarding school in Yorkshire at the Ripon Cathedral Choir School from 1965 to 1969. Between 1969 and 1976, he went to the Royal Russell School in Surrey.[6] In 1976, he pursued a one-year Foundation course at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design after which he studied at Leeds Polytechnic, graduating in 1980 with a BA (Honors) degree in Fine Art.[7]
At Leeds, Bull studied printmaking and Fine Art under the tutelage of Norman Webster R.E. and Norman Ackroyd RA. During this time, his focus was the study of the masters, such as Henri Fantin-Latour, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, and Rembrandt. Watercolorist John Sell Cotman was the subject of his dissertation. In his graduating year, he exhibited his etching “Jackie” at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and his works were acquired by Leeds City Art Gallery.[1] [8]
Career[edit]
In June of 2021, Bull was one of ten artists who created a public installation piece in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA for the "Heart of Carmel" project hosted by the inaugural Leadership Carmel Class of 2020/2021. This exhibition ran through the end of August, 2021 after which the hearts were auctioned off to support future leaders with scholarships through the Carmel Woman’s Club and the Carmel Chambers Leadership Program. His piece was entitled Bohemia.[9]
In 2019, Bull became the Official Artist of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. During the Festival, he lead a “Beyond the Studio” workshop at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.[10]
In 2019, Bull hosted an Aston Martin Newport Beach event for the Concours D'Elegance in Pebble Beach, CA.[11] He has also been the official artist for The Concours at Pasadera in 2020 and 2021. [12][13]
In 2009, Muhammad Ali commissioned Bull to paint US President Barack Obama.[14] His two joint portraits of Barack Obama and Muhammad Ali were unveiled at the Kentucky Bluegrass Ball on the eve of the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. by actress Ashley Judd.[15][16]
In 2007, Bull was invited to paint a series of portraits that celebrated the life of the boxer Muhammad Ali.[17][18] Many of these works are in the permanent collection of the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky. At the Vancouver Film Festival, he spoke on behalf of the Muhammad Ali Center for the premiere of the movie Facing Ali.[19][20]
In 2002, he was selected along with fellow artists Thomas Kinkade and Howard Behrens to commemorate the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.[21] These works were unveiled at an event in New York City in the Spring by Donald Trump.[22][23][24]
In 1976, Bull had his first solo art exhibition in Hong Kong when he was only eighteen years old.[25] He continued on to have more solo exhibitions throughout Great Britain, Amsterdam, Paris, Italy, Dubai, Japan, again in Hong Kong and all over the USA.[26]
Representation and Distribution[edit]
Simon Bull's art is currently represented exclusively by his own company Simon Bull Studios of Monterey, CA. Simon Bull has two galleries: MEUSE gallery on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA which opened in 2017 and MEUSE gallery on Main Street in St. Helena, CA which opened two years later in 2019.
Simon Bull Studios worked with several fine art galleries around the world including Park West Gallery[27] until 2017. Simon's art has been represented in the UK by London Contemporary Art and DeMontfort Fine Art as well as in the US with Media Arts Group. Art Brands Group is his worldwide licensing agent.[8][28]

Bull received multiple National Association of Limited Edition Dealers awards[29] for Graphic Print/Lithograph of the Year. In 2003, he became the first British artist to win the NALED award for his print "The Journey Never Ends",[30][31] and again in 2004 for "Bird of Paradise". He was also honored in 2004 with the NALED Medal of Honor [29] for artistic services to the limited edition industry.[32][33][34]
