Early Life[edit]

Simon Jimenez is a gay, Filipino American.[3] He visited family in both the Philippines and Canada as a child, as well as other places around the world. [4] Because of his travels, Jimenez has been exposed to various cultures which he channeled into his writings. [4]

Jimenez began playing piano at a very young age and credits it for his taste in melodic music. The melodies of music influenced his writing style in his novel.[4] His love of science fiction also started in his youth. Jimenez would research the books that won the major science fiction prizes and then read each of them. [5] The first book of science fiction that he remembers reading is A Wrinkle in Time which his dad would read it to him before bed. [5] Jimenez noticed that the characters in the novels he read lacked diversity in terms of race and sexual orientation. This would later lead to his want to portray diverse characters in his own novel. [3]

He graduated from Emerson College with a Master's of Fine Arts.[1] It was during his time at Emerson College that Jimenez wrote the beginnings of his novel. [3] He currently lives in Philadelphia and works as a personal assistant to a Mid-Century Modern furniture dealer. [6]

Influences[edit]

Simon Jimenez was influenced by several authors including David Mitchell, Gabriel García Márquez and Jennifer Egan.[5] [4] He was inspired by the world building of Dan Simmons in his series The Hyperion Cantos and Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep. [5]

While writing Jimenez frequently listens to music he describes as "sweeping orchestral stuff," such as the soundtrack to Gattaca. [4] He wouldn't listen to any songs that had words and strictly stuck to anything that was purely instrumental. [4]
