Simply Onno GmbH is a Berlin-based health tech startup founded in 2024. The company’s main product is a digital web service that explains medical documents in simple terms,so patients can understand them more easily. They offer a free and paid version. The free offer is a comprehensive summary of the document and the paid product a detailed explanation of the medical terminology including a practical checklist for the next medical appointment. It was developed in collaboration with practicing physicians and they claim its outputs are reviewed at regular intervals by medical specialists.[1]

History

Simply Onno was founded in 2024 by Karen Hentschel, Marc Dantas Tiedemann, Stephan Thiel, and Witold Polanski.[2] The initial idea arose from personal experience with complicated medical cases and the desire to understand the related documents. The demand was reinforced through the routine hospital work, where patients frequently asked for help understanding their reports.

In close collaboration with physicians providing ongoing feedback on the accuracy of the translation, the initial version of the service was launched in December 2024. It allowed users to upload medical documents to an online platform, which then rewrites the content providing the users with a summary in simple, easy to understand language.[3][4][5]

In August 2005 the service introduced the detailed explanation. A paid offering providing a comprehensive explanation of the provided documents. This detailed version walks through each section of the document step by step, clarifies all medical terminology, and adds helpful background information to put findings into context. It also outlines what typically happens next in comparable medical situations and includes a practical checklist to help patients prepare confidently for their upcoming medical appointments.

The idea arose from routine hospital work, where patients frequently asked for help understanding their reports; this background was later described by the Sächsische Zeitung.[3]

Independently supported by non-profit groups

Throughout its first year Simply Onno gained attention from various non-profit groups such as the the *German Stroke Foundation* who presented Simply Onno as a way to make complex documents clearer for patients.[5] The *Social Association VdK* reported early user feedback from regional tests.[4][6] and the *VdK Nord* published a conversation with one of its members explaining the service in detail.[7]

In *Monitor Versorgungsforschung*, the service was placed in a wider context of digital health communication.[8] The company was also listed in the *EU-Startups* directory and mentioned by the *Landesverband Senioren NRW*.[9][10]

Awards

In 2025, WELT awarded Simply Onno with the German KI Startup Award ("Best AI Startup").[11]

Clinical studies

In 2025, the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden initiated two prospective, randomised studies that include the use of Simply Onno in clinical communication.[12][13] Both trials are listed in the German Clinical Trials Register and investigate whether AI-assisted translation of medical documents and discharge letters into layman's language improves patient comprehension and satisfaction compared to standard documents. The studies also analyze, whether such interventions have influence on the consultation time.[14][15] The study protocoll was published in JMIR Research Protocols.[16]
