Advocate Simranjit Kaur Gill is a social activist and a lawyer. She earned her LL.B degree from Panjab University.
Student Politics
An alma mater of Panjab University, Chandigarh, she was the first female to emerge as a leader of Panjab University Chandigarh when elected as General Secretary of NSUI Panjab University.[1] In 2014, she again became the first female head of the party, becoming Chief Patron of NSUI Panjab University.[2] During this period, she was on a hunger strike for the rights of girls, specifically raising the demand for 24/7 library entry for girls.[3] She was hospitalized on 22 August 2014 as her condition deteriorated.[4] She sat on another hunger strike for lowering the credit score for students. [5]
Social Activism
She was appointed as Secretary PPCC in July 2016. But soon after, she realized her interests did not align with politics, so she resigned and started working for children and women’s rights in Punjab. In 2019, Simranjit Kaur Gill started her campaign “ਬਚਪਨ ਬਚਾਉ” (Save Childhood) against child abuse, focusing specifically on sex abuse. She was authorized by the Punjab School Education Department to conduct lectures and seminars in all the schools across Punjab to raise awareness of child abuse and its legal remedies.[6]
Finally, in November 2019, Simranjit Kaur Gill received authorization to conduct seminars in all schools of Punjab as part of her campaign “ਬਚਪਨ ਬਚਾਉ”.[7]
Controversy
An FIR was registered against her under the SC/ST Act. Keeping in view the need to maintain law and order, she gave herself up for voluntary arrest on 18/1/2020.[8] Everyone in Punjab, including NRIs across the world, condemned this arrest and demanded cancellation of the FIR, considering her fight for child and women’s rights.[9] After her bail was rejected by the lower court on grounds of maintaining peace in Punjab, the honorable Punjab and Haryana High Court finally gave a detailed order accepting the bail plea.[10]
