The Sindoor Bridge, historically known as the Carnac Bridge, is a critical east-west road over bridge (ROB) located in South Mumbai, India.[1] Spanning the Central Railway tracks between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid Bunder railway station, it connects P.D. Mello Road with Mohammad Ali Road and Lokmanya Tilak Marg.[2][3]
First constructed in 1868 during the British colonial era, the 154-year-old historic bridge was demolished in late 2022 after structural audits deemed it unsafe.[4] It was completely rebuilt by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and reopened to traffic on 10 July 2025 under its new official name, Sindoor Bridge.[5]
History
Colonial Era (1868–2022)
During the 1840s, the financial boom in Bombay led to the construction of a network of maritime docks north of the historic Fort area, including Carnac Bunder, Clare Bunder, and Clerk Bunder.[4] The rapid expansion of India's first railway line to Thane in the 1850s severed the direct overland movement of industrial goods between these active docks and the domestic city core.[4]
To restore east-west connectivity, the Carnac Bridge was completed in 1868 over the railway tracks.[4] The bridge, the surrounding bunder, and the adjoining road were named in honour of Sir James Rivett-Carnac, who had served as the Governor of the Bombay Presidency from 1839 to 1841.[4][6] It remained a pivotal transit route for heavy commercial container trucks and passenger vehicles navigating the port ecosystem for over a century and a half.[2]
Demolition
Following structural evaluations conducted by safety engineers, the bridge was classified as severely dilapidated and unfit for vehicular load.[2] Traffic was fully suspended over the structure to prevent catastrophic failure. In August 2022, the Mumbai Traffic Police officially issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to the railway authorities to pull down the overpass.[7] Central Railway dismantled the old iron and masonry superstructure during a major technical traffic block in November 2022.[8]
Reconstruction and renaming
The reconstruction of the modern flyover was executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in logistical coordination with Central Railway, which reviewed and approved the structural design over active lines.[6] The infrastructure project encountered execution delays stemming from dense neighborhood congestion, local administrative clearances, and the complex alignment of heavy railway steel girders over the busy suburban lines.[9]
Upon completion of the civil works, the Government of Maharashtra decided to officially rename the structure to remove its colonial association.[5] The bridge was rechristened "Sindoor Bridge" to commemorate "Operation Sindoor"—a military cross-border operation carried out by the Indian Armed Forces targeting terror camps following an attack in Pahalgam.[5][9] The naming proposal was formally put forward by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar and unanimously approved by the civic body.[9]
The modern reconstructed bridge was officially inaugurated on 10 July 2025 by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.[5]

The newly constructed bridge structure features modernized civil specifications to handle heavy South Mumbai traffic flow:
