Singapore Space Challenge

The Singapore Space Challenge (SSC) is a national design competition open to students from upper secondary school (Grades 9-10 equivalent) to Universities. The contest is organized by the Singapore Space and Technology Association (SSTA).[1] Accompanied with the challenge, participants get to enrich their knowledge by attending multiple learning sessions arranged, from meeting experts in the technical field to visiting workshops held by companies, which aids students in the challenge itself.

Inspire interest among youth and encourage participation in space-related activities[edit]

Every year SSC's challenge statement is unique to previous years and is specifically attuned to be relevant and challenging to students of varying age. In keeping the challenge statement different yearly, it maintains the new and existing students interest in space activities and broadens their knowledge on it, motivating students to be active in reading up on space-related activities.[2]

Ignite and fuel the younger generation's interest in STEM through SSC's exciting and out-of-this-world projects[edit]

The main aim of SSC is a design competition to introduce new ideas to solve problems faced in space, hence this introduces students to be more innovative and aware of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and enriches their learning process to be holistic.

Educate the public on the applications and benefits of space technology in our everyday lives[edit]

SSC is widespread nationwide and draws interest of the public to view the challenge for the year, giving an overview and encourages them to read up more on it.

Encourage creative engineering concepts to further innovation and advancements in space and non-space environment[edit]

Students attend workshops and network sessions with experts to gain in-depth knowledge on the subject matter and thus encouraged to use their new found knowledge to design a creative and novel idea to solve existing issues faced by scientists.

Provide a platform where students, academia and the industry can interact to discuss and align technical concerns and research areas and projects[edit]

During the challenge, workshops by companies and meeting-the-expert sessions organized help bridge the gap between students, academia and industry, where sharing of existing real-life issues faced by the space industries and queries by the students helps them to have a clearer mindset and knowing what to work focus on while tackling the challenge statement.[3]
