Sisca Julius
SISCA JULIUS
Sisca Julius won the inaugural 2019 K and L Prize for fiction.[1]. She is a South African writer[2] and also goes by the name Francisca-Chen Julius. She is a Bachelor of Arts student, studying at Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, South Africa[3]. Her majors are Afrikaans, Creative Writing, Anthropology and Heritage Studies[4]. She writes in Afrikaans and English[5]. Two of her siblings are published authors[6].
K & L PRIZE
Julius won the inaugural K & L prize founded last year by the New Zealand-based Nigerian novelist, Myles Ojabo[7]. Speaking about her winning story Honey Bee, she stated that the story comes out of her own fears that the Nama language will become extinct in South Africa[8]. “If you lose your language, you lose your culture,” she stated[9]. Paul Swartbooi, a Nama chief, hailed Julius’s efforts in raising awareness about the ancient San language[10].
In September of 2019, Julius was hosted by The Gathering, an intimate garden rendezvous where local talent is celebrated and given a platform to express their art[11]
