The skirmish at New bridge was a military engagement that took place on May 30, 1780, at New Bridge Landing in northern New Jersey during the American Revolutionary War.[1] Occurring amidst a series of aggressive British raids into the Hackensack Valley, a force of roughly 300 to 400 British soldiers and Hessian auxiliaries where to engage local Continental Army forces and Bergen County militia at the strategic Hackensack River crossing at the Zabriskie house.[2] [3] though not engaging in their intended target. The skirmish had resulted in a Patriot victory, with the British forces retreating after sustaining 8 dead and more injured due to the tactical confusion.[4]
Background
By the months leading up to the skirmish the British had been attacking the area on the 23rd of march where Bergan militia had attacked a group of 600 British and hessian forces resulting in a British victory [5] also on April 15th a mix of 312 loyalist,British,and hessian soldiers led by Major Johann Du Buy had attacked the patriot outpost lead by Lieutenant Bryson, resulting in a British victory. Also the day after the British had lead a raid on an American outpost in Ho-Ho-Kus resulting in Patriot John J. Hopper was seriously wounded, and local family homes, barns, and a grist mill were burned down by the raiding forces and the patriot taking 40 killed or injured and over 50 taken captive.
Skirmish
On the midnight of may 30, a force of around 300 British infantry and hessian auxiliaries lead by loyalist colonel Abraham Van Buskirk had marched from their garrison bases nearby.There mission was to execute a swift surprise assault on the sleeping Bergan county militia inside the Zebrinski house. Van Buskirk had intended for the force to surround,eliminate,or capture the militia and securing the bridge for the crown.first To maximize the chances of him succeeding and to deny any American force to retreat to the river, he had split his force in to different columns instructing each to simultaneously approach the house from different angles.[6] Though this plan was highly coordinated and thought out the plan would not work because of lack of illumination combining with the fact that there was a total breakdown of the communication between the Colums. So as the main columns had converged onto the grounds of the estate the lead of the columns had lost all situational awareness they had mistaken friend for foe,and had mistook the silhouettes of there allies for American militia. Both advancing columns had opened fire on each other and before anybody realized 8 where killed and more where badly injured.[6]
