sk:n is a chain of UK-based clinics specialising in the treatment of skin conditions including laser-based treatments, cosmetic and anti-ageing treatments, minor surgical procedures including mole and skin tag removal, and acne and acne scar treatment.

History[edit]

Lasercare Clinics Harrogate Limited, trading as sk:n, was founded on October 3rd 1990[2] by John Gill in Leeds.[22] It was a private clinic at Harrogate District Hospital and its initial specialism was in port wine stain birthmark removal using lasers.[23] A stand-alone clinic was opened in Birmingham City Hospital in 1993, followed by a private clinic on Harley Street in the same year.[23]

In the early days of its existence the company has established an ongoing partnership with the National Health Service (NHS).[24]

In January 1996, two Lasercare Clinics were opened in Scotland, at Southern General Hospital and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, with the NHS partially covering the treatment.[25][26]

In 1998, Lasercare Clinics in Glasgow was one of the first clinics in Scotland that used Er:YAG laser to treat wrinkles and perform other skin treatments.[27] In 2002, Birmingham and London Lasercare Clinics were first in Britain to pioneer the Excimer laser treatment.[28]

Lasercare Clinics was re-branded as sk:n Clinic in 2005.[29] The company first clinic opened in Glasgow in February 2005.[30] In 2005 the company was treating around 15,000 clients a month.[31]

John Gill and Paul Jones sold the business in 2006 to a venture capital firm Graphite Capital for an undisclosed amount.[31]

In 2007, Lasercare Clinics (Harrogate) Limited won a suit against Procter & Gamble for using it’s registered “sk:n” trademark.[32] In 2009, sk:n clinics specialists carried skin cancer screenings for more than 300 cricketers as part of the agreement with the Professional Cricketers Association.[33]

In 2011, the company launched its first range of skin care products.[34]

In October 2012, ASA reviewed the consumer complaint related to the company’s paid search advertising at Google and decided that it’s stretch marks ads vere misleading.[35]

In 2014, British futurologist Ray Hammond invited Sk:n Clinics dermatologists and skin experts into a group of experts when he launched Find Your Future Face, a quiz site that predicted lifestyle advances by 2064 and how will they change people’s faces.[36] The firm also launched a controversial advertising campaign with the British model and actress Megan Morewood and journalist Helen Wright transformed with acne.[37]

In November 2017, the firm moved its London’s Harley Street clinic previously located at 144 Harley Street[6] to number two Harley Street[7] and opened its 47th clinic in Plymouth[10]

In 2018, the firm opened its 49th clinic in South Woodford.[5] Also in 2018, media reported that Lasercare Clinics Harrogate Ltd, the company behind sk:n Clinic trade name, is among the companies with the biggest gender pay gap in West Midlands.[38]

Financials[edit]

In 2010, Lasercare Clinics Harrogate Ltd had an operational revenue of £24.8.[39] In February 2016, LaingBuisson, an English healthcare consultant, reported that the company’s revenue was £25.2m for the year ended 31 August 2015.[21] D&B Hoovers estimates that the company earned US$ 37.8 M in revenues and had an income of $4.75 M in 2018.[20]
