Sleetbow

A monochrome sleetbow captured the morning of January 7, 2016. Valparaiso, Indiana.

A Sleetbow or "Sleet bow" is a rare variation of the more commonly known meteorological phenomenon the multicolored Rainbow, where Sleet (ice pellets) are causing light from the sun to reflect, refract, and disperse creating a spectrum of light in the sky[1] instead of liquid water like in a traditional rainbow. Another variation of this can happen during heavy hail.

History of Sightings

While sleetbows have not been heavily documented, there have been a few sightings of them over the past four years. The most recent was on January 7, 2016, when a Monochrome sleetbow was documented over Valparaiso, Indiana. A Monochrome rainbow or Red Rainbow is a rainbow that is just one color, usually red. The US National Weather Service in Chicago, Illinois confirms this report.[2] Other sightings were also made that day of possible sleetbows, but no confirmation has been made yet by the National Weather Service in Chicago that sleet was falling at the time of observation. On December 21, 2012, sleetbows were being reported in the state of Vermont, including in Jonesville, Vermont.[3]
