Sleman Ahmad Sleman, widely known as Sleman Harki (Kurdish: سلێمان ھەرکی‎), is a prominent Kurdish folk singer from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He is best known for his emotional performances of traditional Kurdish musical styles, particularly Lawk and Hayran.

Biography

Sleman Ahmad was born in the village of Dere in the Zrarati region of Erbil Governorate. He belongs to the Mam Brahima family, a branch of the Harki tribe. Due to social issues and tribal disputes, he relocated and currently resides in Mazne village in the Soran region. He is married and has two daughters.[1]

Musical Style

Harki has a unique style in Kurdish folk music. While he performs various types of Kurdish songs, including Maqams and Mawals, his audience primarily recognizes him for his mastery of traditional folklore styles such as "Lawk" and "Hayran," which require high vocal skill and deep knowledge of Kurdish heritage.

Imprisonment and Release

In 2005, Sleman Ahmad was arrested following a social dispute. According to court rulings, he served nearly 14 years in prison. On August 28, 2018, after completing his sentence, he was released by the Erbil court and subsequently returned to his artistic career.[2]
