The SLICE of LIFE is a fishing boat used as a prop in the American television series Dexter (2006–2013), aired on Showtime. In the series, the boat is used by the protagonist, Dexter Morgan, a forensic analyst and serial killer, to dispose of his victims' bodies off the coast of Miami, Florida.
Description
The SLICE of LIFE is a 29 ft (8.8 m) 2001 Century 2901 center console boat, designed for offshore fishing.[1] It features twin outboard engines and was customized for the series with decals reading "SLICE of LIFE, MIAMI, FLORIDA." During production, it was equipped with twin 250 Yamaha engines, which were replaced with twin 300 Suzuki engines in a 2020 repower.[2]
Role in Dexter
The SLICE of LIFE appeared in most episodes of Dexter throughout all eight seasons, though a 28-foot Whitewater boat was used for the pilot episode and some establishing shots in season one.[3] During production, the boat was primarily stored on a trailer behind a soundstage in Los Angeles and at a slip in Long Beach Marina, with occasional trips to Miami for filming.[4] In the series finale, "Remember the Monsters?" (aired September 22, 2013), the boat is depicted as wrecked during a hurricane, though the real boat remained operational.[5]
Post-production history
After Dexter ended in 2013, the boat was sold by the show's transportation coordinator, Sergio Orozco, to stunt coordinator Wally Crowder.[6][7] In 2020, it was purchased by James Judge and Danielle Judge, who have maintained and restored it, including the 2020 engine repower.[8] The boat appears at fan conventions, where attendees can board it and take photos, often referencing scenes from the series.[9]
Hurricane Ian rescue operations
In September 2022, following Hurricane Ian, the SLICE of LIFE was used by owner James Judge in rescue operations organized by Project DYNAMO. The boat assisted in evacuating people and animals from Sanibel Island and Pine Island, Florida, navigating floodwaters to transport survivors and pets to safety.[10]
Scaradise 2025 appearance
From October 3–5, 2025, the SLICE of LIFE was displayed at Scaradise, a horror convention in Tampa, Florida. The event included a reunion of Dexter cast members, including Jennifer Carpenter, Erik King, David Zayas, and Desmond Harrington. Fans photographed and boarded the boat, and Carpenter signed the center console cabin door, marking her first interaction with the boat since filming the series finale.[11]
Cultural impact
The SLICE of LIFE is recognized as a notable prop from Dexter, appearing in fan art, 3D models, and themed merchandise.[12] Its preservation allows it to remain a point of interest at conventions and for fans of the series.
