Description
A design charrette was held October 2015 and the public voted on a plan with open green space and access to the river.[3] The park will provide a publicly accessible boat launch for kayaking and canoeing on the Kinnickinnic River in Milwaukee's inner harbor. A Seiche Garden water fountain and decorative art wall will add to the aesthetics and a playground made out of re-purposed shipping containers will be available for children to play.[4]
Natural History
Before the City of Milwaukee was created, the area was a vast marshland with abundant stores of wild rice. Black ash, Cedar and Tamarack swamps were found throughout.[5] Commerce through the waterways evolved the land into an industrial hub.[6] The location is in proximity to the former Milwaukee Solvay Coke and Gas Company and was used for industrial purposes, such as coal storage and coke production until 1983.[7]
