Slow Tech

Slow technology is the combination of high tech and low tech. The concept of slow-tech is born with the gap between high-tech and low-tech. In the community spirit, low-tech means the implementation of a solution without using high technologies.

Origins

Slow technology can be defined as the rational use of high technology. By rational use it means to take into account the environmental, social and economical impacts for the deployment of that technology. In some definitions, in light of a problem, if the technology that wants to be deployed is not essential to the solution, then it mustn't be used.

Overall, slow technology is a response to the overconsumption of high technology.[1]. This overconsumption has triggered a non sustainable trend.

The term slow tech was first used in the book "Slow-Tech : Manifesto for an Over-wound World", by Price, Andrew published in 2009[2]. This term was also used in two other books, with similar meanings:

  • Slow-Tech and ICT: A Responsible, Sustainable and Ethical Approach; Patrignani, Norberto ; Whitehouse, Diane[3] published in 2018
  • Tendre vers la sobriété numérique, by Frédéric Bordage published on October 5th, 2021[4].

Slow tech and design for sustainability

Under the words: "good, clean and fair"[5], Slow tech urges designers and engineers to take into account sustainability aspects[6].

While designing an object, these professionals must keep in mind the effect that the object is going to have in the environment. They must think how this object will interact with the environment. Slow tech must design for sustainability[7]

Slow tech and Repairability

One of the aspects of slow tech technology is the repairability of it. Slow tech, when viewed as a product, must be repairable by consumers or its components must be available, in order to make this repair possible. It is linked to the right to repair movement.

Slow tech and Recycling

Designing for the end of life. In most of the cases, designers and engineers don't take into account the end of life of the product. Some books [8] provide perspective, background, methods, and data for thinking about and designing with materials to minimize their environmental impact like. There are simple questions that help professionals make more informed decisions:

  • How is this object going to be recycled?
  • How can it be easier to recycle this product?
