Small Jam is a Solomon Islands musical reggae duo made up of Mosten Hani and Heston Kiu. In 2017, they were featured in an adaptation of "Iko Iko" recorded by Papua New Gunea artist Justin Wellington under the title "Iko Iko (My Bestie)".
Career[edit]
Small Jam was formed in the Solomon Islands in 2011. Member Mosten Hani (also known as Kat/Mossa) was from Doormans Project (DMP) and Heston Kiu (also known as Jiu Kiu) from Onetox. The duo also had an accompanying group. The duo mix reggae beats with traditional music from the Solomon Islands. [1] The band released several singles and in 2014 the album I Won't Give Up via Mangrove Productions.[2]
Small Jam's international breakthrough came with taking part in a new cover of "Iko Iko" done by Justin Wellington. Originally "Iko Iko" had been recorded by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford in 1953 and popularised by The Dixie Cups, Dr. John, Captain Jack amongst others. Justin Wellington's adapted version of the song as "Iko Iko (My Bestie)" featuring Small Jam in 2017. It received worldwide attention as part of a social platform TikTok challenge. As a result, the cover was released by Sony Music UK on June 3, 2019 and gained even wider popularity in 2021.[3][4] His version makes various changes to the lyrics of the verses, and has its own original sections, but keeps the chorus the same.
