Smartbus
A smartbus is a type of city bus that incorporates autonomous driving functions enabling movement without a driver inside bus depots. The term is used in European transport literature to describe an early stage of bus automation limited to closed operational areas. The concept has been discussed in professional and industry publications since 2025 in connection with pilot projects in Poland.[1]

History
In 2025, the public transport operator MZA Warsaw carried out a prototype test of an autonomous bus performing driverless manoeuvres within one of its depots.[3] Following this demonstration, MZA Warsaw began preparing the design of a new facility, referred to as the Redutowa depot, which is intended to include infrastructure for autonomous operations.[4]

Smartbuses combine standard bus platforms with autonomous driving systems adapted for depot use. These systems typically include lidar-based perception, localisation tools, and mission-control software that coordinates vehicle movements such as parking, washing, charging, and maintenance.[1]
