Smotrim (Russian: Смотрим, lit. "Watching") is a Russian state-owned online video platform run by VGTRK. This platform started operating on November 1, 2020.[1][2]

This platform provides contents of Russia-1, Russia-24, Russia-K, RTR-Planeta, Radio Rossii, and Vesti FM.[3]

This platform features news, political talk shows, TV series, movies, cartoons, documentaries, entertainment shows, as well as live broadcasts from over 20 Russian TV channels.

History[edit]

The domain smotrim.ru was registered in 2006.[4] In October 2020 it was announced that VGTRK would create its own media platform combining all of its content.[5]

The Smotrim service will become a unique aggregator of all VGTRK's contents. SMOTRIM.RU will collect everything that can be seen or heard on the media holding's channels: federal and regional news, analytical talk shows, favorite movies and TV series, premieres, exclusives, and much more. This is a user-friendly media platform of VGTRK contents.

VGTRK

On March 14 2021, the TV channel Russia-1 was announced that the number of users of Smotrim has passed the mark of more than a million.

In March 2021, the platform started providing a selection of VGTRK documentaries. Among them is "Crimea. The Way Home" (by Andrei Kondrashov), "Beslan" (by Alexander Rogatkin), "Rzhev. 500 Days in the Fire", "The Great Unknown War", "The Munich Conspiracy. An Invitation to Hell", "Panfilovtsy. Legend and Fable", "The Land of Aylan Kurdi", "The Great Russian Revolution", "The Warsaw Pact. Unclassified Pages", "Mussolini. Sunset" and others, which some were restricted by YouTube video hosting service.[6]

Availability[edit]

The platform is available in smotrim.ru, in apps for iOS and Android mobile operating systems, and on Samsung and LG smart TVs.

In 2021, the "Smotrim" platform was included in the list of applications that are mandatory pre-installation on smart TVs sold in Russia from April 1 2021.[7]

On April 1, 2021, the media platform became available on Apple TV set-top boxes, as well as on TV sets and media players based on Android TV.

After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Apple removed the Smotrim app from all countries except for Russia.

Sanctions[edit]

On July 8, 2022, because of Russian invasion of Ukraine, Canada added Smotrim to the sanctions list, as a platform of disinformation and propaganda.[8]
