From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

SocialBoost is a Ukrainian tech non-governmental organization that develops socially meaningful IT-projects, promotes e-democracy and open data. SocialBoost coordinates activities of more than 1,000 IT-enthusiasts, biggest IT-companies and government bodies in Ukraine.[1].

History

The organization was founded by Ukrainian IT-activists Denis Gursky and Victor Gursky. It started out with a couple of hackathons on human trafficking, human security, and internally displaced persons' issues, organized with the support of USAID [2]. One of the hackathons brought together more than 100 developers, designers, journalists, civic activists and government officials to brainstorm services for internally displaced persons [3]. In 2014, SocialBoost developed a prototype of the national open data portal, data.gov.ua [4]

1991 Open Data Incubator

In 2016, to coordinate the development of open-data based IT-products, SocialBoost launched 1991 Open Data Incubator. 1991 is a non-profit institution that accelerates startups, services, and IT-projects, working with open government data. [5]. Support includes Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, several ministries, and international organizations such as Microsoft, Open Knowledge Foundation, and Open Data Institute [6].

In summer 2017, within Open Data Challenge competition, 1991 launched an incubation program for 10 Ukraine's best open-data based startups, selected out of around 170 applications. These are, for example, IT-solutions for Ukraine's judiciary system, local transport, blood donation, Verkhovna Rada members' actions' control, and more. Within the incubation, the selected startup teams finalize their business models, gain new practical skills, test products' usability. At the end of the program, three best teams will share the prize fund of 1.5 million UAH. [7]

Participatory Budgeting

In order to boost democracy on local level in Ukraine, the organization developed an IT-system for participatory budgeting. As of 2018, 63 Ukrainian cities use the platform. Over two million people have been involved in allocating cities' budget money for community needs. [8]
