The Society for Economic and Social Cybernetics (GWS) is a non-profit scientific society. From the beginning (1968), the GWS was intended to bring together actors from (top) management and science who were interested in the discussion and further development of economic and social cybernetic problems. To this day, the GWS sees itself as a community committed to the development and application of systems thinking in all its facets.

The discourse on economic and social cybernetics aims to overcome the disciplinary boundaries between the natural sciences, humanities, and engineering sciences and their academic communities, and at the same time to promote the formation of new, scientifically based perspectives and disciplines. The focus of the GWS is on applications in business, society, and politics.

Goals and Membership[edit]

The GWS has set the following goals in its statutes

  • to demonstrate, develop, and disseminate the ideas and methods of systems theory and cybernetics in business, politics, and society in interaction with the knowledge and experience of general science and practice.
  • to educate and train leaders in business, politics, and administration in general principles and applied systems theory and applied cybernetics, and to promote interest in cybernetics, especially among young people.
  • to promote research and studies dealing with the application of systems theory and cybernetics in economic and social fields.

Collective Intelligence Letters[edit]

GWS is in the process of launching a novel scholarly journal called Collective Intelligence Letters. This will establish an interdisciplinary, multimedia medium for a global forum of transdisciplinary scientific inquiry. It will address systems theory and cybernetics perspectives on the collective use and exploitation of information, communication, and control in/of social systems (corporations, organizations, and institutions).

Conference Proceedings[edit]

Scientific conferences are held regularly and documented in a special publication in German. The focus is on approaches to solving practical problems by applying systems theory and/or cybernetics axioms, insights, and methods.
