Society of Teachers of Family Medicine

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) is a professional medical organization of those involved in the education of family medicine physicians, primarily in the United States. STFM was founded in 1967[1] and is headquartered in Leawood, Kansas.

Members[edit]

Approximately 8,987 people work in US academic family medicine faculty positions, more than 80% of whom are physicians, according to a 2015 study of US family medicine programs and departments.[2] A majority of these are members of STFM. As of 2015, STFM had almost 5,000 members.[3] Members of STFM include "physicians involved in teaching medical students and residents at university sites and in community settings," as well as "primary care researchers, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, administrators, and of course students and residents," according to a former STFM president.[4]

Educational Resources[edit]

STFM develops and maintains a variety of teaching resources and provides faculty development opportunities for family physician educators.[5] It organizes several annual conferences: a spring conference,[6] a conference on medical student education,[7] and a conference on practice and quality improvement. In collaboration with the American Academy of Family Physicians, it maintains a directory of fellowship opportunities for family medicine physicians.[8] STFM also supports an alliance of organizations called CERA, that supports and encourages educational research. CERA stands for the CAFM Educational Resource Alliance, where CAFM is the Council of Academic Family Medicine.[9]

Publications[edit]

  • Annals of Family Medicine - a peer-reviewed research journal focused on health and primary care
  • Family Medicine - the official journal of STFM
  • PRiMER (Peer-Reviewed Reports in Medical Education Research) - an open access journal that publishes research in medical education and health workforce policy
  • STFM Messenger - a monthly electronic news publication covering STFM and academic family medicine

Foundation[edit]

The STFM Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that funds STFM projects aimed at recruiting, training, and retaining family medicine faculty.[10] Examples include the New Faculty Scholars Program, several Underrepresented in Medicine activities,[11] an International Scholarship,[12] as well as other training programs, scholarships, and awards.[13]

Affiliations[edit]

STFM is a member of the Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM), which is comprised of the leadership of STFM and three other academic family medicine organizations: the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM), the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), and the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG).[14]
