Sofena[edit]

Sofena /sofena:, Sophena/ Goddess of Caucasian paganism. Sofena had been worshiped as the Caucasian deity of water sources, springs and purity. In some regions of Caucasus people worshiped her for abundant precipitation awaiting for the plenteous harvest in autumn.

According to the myth, there was drought in Caucasus and everything around had been dying. The starvation had been inevitable. People donated their fortune but Pagan Gods had not responded to their appeal. Last hope vanished and the elders of village had decided to sacrifice a virgin to please the all Gods and get a little rain.

However no peasant had ventured to give her daughter, and had been hidden their children far away from the village. That time a virgin named Sofena decided to sacrifice herself for the sack of village and she rushed off the cliff.

Afterwards it was raining constantly and in the place where she touched down the ground a watery lake appeared. The Gods valued self-sacrifice of Sofena and gave her immortality. People worshiped her as a Goddess of water and purity as she saved the village from true death.
