SoftwarePlant is a project portfolio management software company that develops BigPicture and BigGantt.
Initially focused on Atlassian ecosystem, since 2016 the company develops its own project management platform under the name of BigPicture.One.
Strategy and growth[edit]
As Tom Kucharski said in the 2017 interview[1], the company's goal is to combine the power of first-tier tools that "the teams love" into a single meta-framework. Jira, Trello, and Google Calendar were named as primary targets. The CEO said that the company was also developing its native task manager, for BigPicture.One to be a standalone app.
The company released a Trello power-up in 2018.[2]
In August 2017 7600 organizations subscribed to BigPicture and BigGantt combined. The company's user count totaled 14013 in December 2019[3].
SoftwarePlant has been named Top Vendor by Atlassian since 2017.[4]
Technologies[edit]
The company's portfolio relies on Java and Angular. A REST API has been announced in 2019 for the clients to be able to add custom features to BigPicture.[5]
Competition and controversy[edit]
Asana, Monday, Jira Align, and Wrike are major competitors of SoftwarePlant.[6] While many software companies aligned with the agile revolution that occurred in the project management world in the 2000s and 2010s, SoftwarePlant retained classic, timeline-based tools, especially the Gantt chart, in its main product.
In 2017 and 2018 SoftwarePlant products' SaaS versions were criticized for their performance[7]. In November 2019 the company announced the overhaul in its Java and Angular code and released updated versions.
