Software Licensing Description Table

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A Software Licensing Description Table (SLIC) is a digital signature in the BIOS of a computer. [1] This is in most cases placed by the manufacturer in the ACPI table and does not represent executable code. PC manufacturers that sell OEM versions of Microsoft Windows and other Microsoft products with their products may use the SLIC to authenticate the license of use the supplied software. Systems with a SLIC can thus be pre-activated without an Internet connection with a special OEM key. The verification of the key and a corresponding verification for the executing hardware takes place via a certificate (in XML format) of the manufacturer together with the data in the SLIC. Pre-activation is only possible when reinstalling an unchanged Windows installation if both the OEM key and the certificate are available to the user. However, this is rarely the case since in most cases a Windows installation already modified by the manufacturer is provided with additional information (logo, support information) (usually as a hidden partition on the hard disk or on an external medium such as a DVD). which already contains the certificate.

Also for the product activation of volume licenses of Windows using KMS server, the SLIC table may be significant: If the motherboard of the PC is an OEM board, and their BIOS contains an ACPI SLIC, then this must be intact, and a Windows Flag, otherwise activation via KMS server will fail. In this case, a Windows volume license can only be activated by using MAK instead of KMS (but this may not be allowed by the volume license agreement). If the SLIC table is broken, or if the Windows marker is missing, then a BIOS upgrade to a standard BIOS without a SLIC table, if available for that board, can help (the base license required by the license agreement is required) missing SLIC table only detectable if necessary, but not entered in the BIOS).
