Sohm Kapila (born February 10, 1983) is an Indian-born British-American actress, filmmaker, and mezzo-soprano singer.[1] She is a member of SAG-AFTRA and UK Equity. Kapila is recognized for her work in West End musical theatre, notably the premiere of Bend It Like Beckham, and for her television roles in series such as The Morning Show, Never Have I Ever, and 9-1-1.[2]

Early Life and Education

Kapila was born in Pathankot, India, and raised in Nottingham, England. Her father, Shyam Kapila, served in the Indian Air Force and later the UK police force; her mother, Madhu Bala Kapila (d. 2011), was a nurse and midwife. She has a brother and a half-brother.

She began her training at age 14 at the Central Television Workshop in Nottingham and furthered her formal education at Clarendon College, Nottingham.[3] Kapila credits her foundational development to mentors Tony Cotton (Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Education) and Helen Toft, noting their collaborative influence on her early professional training.[4]

Kapila earned a BA (Hons) in Acting from the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in 2004.[1] She also holds diplomas in Film Acting and Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy (NYFA) from their campuses in New York City. In 2017, following her relocation to Los Angeles, she was selected for the BAFTA Newcomers Program and remains an active member of the BAFTA Connect program.[5]

Career

Theatre and Radio

Kapila's early career included a six-season run as Nadia Akhtar on the BBC Asian Network series Silver Street.[6] In 2015, she was cast in the original ATG Entertainment West End production of Bend It Like Beckham, directed by Gurinder Chadha at the Phoenix Theatre.[7]

In 2024, she starred as Rekha in the UK premiere of Bhangra Nation at the Birmingham Rep.[8] Kapila noted that her portrayal of Rekha—an immigrant leaving India to start a new life—resonated deeply with her own experience of relocating from the UK to Los Angeles, stating, "I really resonate with the reasons why she chose to leave her motherland."[4] Her performance was praised by The Stage as "instinctively fabulous" and by The Guardian for its "superb comic timing."[9]

Film and Television

Kapila's film credits include studio features such as The Mummy (2017), Skyscraper (2018), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). In 2021, she starred as Michelle in the comedy Untitled Horror Movie alongside Kal Penn, Aisha Tyler, and Luke Youngblood.[10]

In U.S. television, she was directed by series star Kevin McKidd in ABC's Grey's Anatomy. In the Sky/HBO production Small Town Big Story, she appeared as Fatima starring alongside Christina Hendricks and it's shows creator Chris O'Dowd.[11]

As a filmmaker, Kapila wrote and produced the thriller Ashes on the Highway, which won Best Dark Drama Short Film at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. The film was nominated for Best US Showcase Short at the 2024 SOHO International Film Festival and was an official selection at the Mammoth Film Festival.[12] Additionally, she appeared in the short film Winds of Silence, directed by Radha Mehta, which was an official selection for the 16days16films festival, a global competition highlighting work that raises awareness around domestic violence.

Voice and Animation

Kapila has narrated several high-profile audiobooks for major global publishers. Notable literary works include the 22-hour biography Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar by Oliver Craske (Hachette),[13] The Patriarchs: The Origins of Inequality by Angela Saini (Beacon Press),[14] and the children's novel Boomi’s Boombox by Shanthi Sekaran (HarperCollins).[15]

Kapila voiced Professor Satyavati Shah in the video game Hogwarts Legacy (2023). In 2024, she was a series regular in the Netflix animated series Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, providing the voice of Lady Violet Carson.[16] That same year, she portrayed Dr. Revati Modi, a primary antagonist in the Terminus campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Artistry and Advocacy

Kapila is a mezzo-soprano with a vocal range of F3 to G5. She is a vocal advocate for South Asian representation and mental health awareness in global media.[4] In 2016, she co-wrote and produced the film The Problem With Kaldeep, which addressed the role of young carers in the South Asian community.[17]

Kapila has also engaged in extensive humanitarian work with The Flying Seagull Project, including filming a documentary in Romania to highlight efforts to bring play and laughter to children in crisis.[3] She has expressed interest in combining performance and culinary arts, citing a dream to host her own cooking show.[4] She is fluent in Hindi and Punjabi.
