Som Subedi
Som Nath Subedi is a Portland-based activist and refugee who has been a prominent voice for immigrant and refugee rights. Born in Bhutan, he was forced to flee his homeland and was resettled in Portland, Oregon in 2008.
Early life
Subedi was born in Bhutan to Nepalese-speaking Hindi parents. However, in the early 1990s, the Bhutan government began a campaign to expel ethnic Nepalese from the country, leading to the forced migration of more than 100,000 people to refugee camps[1] in Nepal. Subedi and his family[2] were among those forced to flee their homeland.
Subedi spent much of his childhood and young adult life in refugee camps in Nepal.[3]
Resettlement in Portland
In 2008, Subedi and his family were resettled in Portland as refugees.[4][5] Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new country and culture,[6] Subedi quickly became involved in local community activities and advocacy work.[3]
In 2015, Subedi founded the Parks for New Portlanders program[7] to encourage community engagement with immigrants utilizing public parks.[8]
Immigrant and refugee activism
Subedi has been a prominent activist and advocate for immigrant and refugee rights in Portland and beyond. He has worked with various organizations to promote access to healthcare, education, and employment for refugees and immigrants, and has been a vocal advocate for policies that support their integration and success. He also kept a suicide watch list for fellow refugees.[9]
In recognition of his work, Subedi has received numerous awards and honors, including the Portland Parks and Recreation's Park Champion of the Year[10] in 2017.
Personal life
Subedi lives in Portland with his wife and three children.[11][12]
