Dr. Somya Gurjar is an Indian politician affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently serving as the Mayor of Jaipur Municipal Corporation Greater. She assumed office on 10 November 2020 following the bifurcation of Jaipur's municipal governance structure into Heritage and Greater corporations. She gained national attention following her election and subsequent reinstatement by the Rajasthan High Court after a period of suspension.[1]
Early life and education
Somya Gurjar is a native of Rajasthan. She holds a doctorate in Economics.[citation needed] Her spouse, Rajaraj Singh Gurjar, is a former legislator from the Karauli constituency in Rajasthan.[2]
Political career
In the 2013 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election, Gurjar contested as an independent candidate from the Karauli constituency. She received 5,854 votes, accounting for 4.03% of the total. The seat was won by Darshan Singh of the Indian National Congress.[3]
In November 2020, she was elected as the first Mayor of the newly formed Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation, defeating Congress candidate Divya Singh Gurjar.[4][5]
In June 2021, she was suspended from her position following administrative disagreements. However, in November 2022, the Rajasthan High Court quashed the suspension order, and she resumed her duties as mayor.[6][7][8][9]
In 2024, she was conferred with the Atal Bhushan Samman by a civic organisation for her role in municipal leadership.[10]
Media coverage
Gurjar's tenure has included conflicts with municipal authorities and allegations of procedural irregularities. Her temporary suspension, and the subsequent judicial relief granted by the Rajasthan High Court and Supreme Court, received significant media attention.[11][12]
Her decision to continue working until hours before childbirth in 2021 was also widely reported in Indian media.[13]
Personal life
She is married to Rajaraj Singh Gurjar, and the couple has one child.[14]
