Introduction[edit]
Son Amaret is a winery located between Felanitx and Manacor, in the heart of Mallorca, known for its intensely flavored wines. Established in 2017 by Dr. Wolfgang Buehler and since then handed down to his son Dr. Thomas Buehler, the Buehler family operates around 11 ha of grape wines since then. The winery currently offers white and rose wines, varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viogner, Syrah Rosado and Rosado Cuvee[1].
History[edit]
The Buehler family originates from Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl in Baden in southwestern Germany. During the 18th century, Johann Jacob Buehler was referenced as “Innkeeper to the vine” and “Innkeeper to the good room”, being the first traceable reference to wine within the Buehler family[2]. Later, his son Johann Georg Buehler was referred to not only “Innkeeper”, but also “Landowner”. Upon his death, this “Landownership” was transferred from Johann Jacob Buehler to Johann Georg Buehler. In 1959, a publication refers to the Buehler family and their tradition with the phrase “Since 1796 family estate in the Ihringer Winklerberg (Kaiserstuhl)”, marking the oldest reference found to date with direct reference to the Buehler family’s own winemaking activities[3].
The founding of “Fritz Buehler Sons” winery in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1850 coincided with the time of Georg Friedrich Buehler[4]. The latter was the first “Fritz” Buehler and indicated as “winery owner” on labels used in 1958. In 1865, Karl Friedrich Buehler was born as the son of Georg Friedrich Buehler, the second “Fritz”. He moved from Ihringen to the nearby Freiburg and operated a wine wholesale business in addition to the Ihringen vineyard at least from 1904 onwards[5]. In 1914 further vineyards were acquired on the Kaiserstühler Winklerberg[6].
After the death of Karl Friedrich Buehler in 1914, the winery in Ihringen, as well as the wine cellar and wholesale business in Freiburg were continued by his widow Amelie Buehler, who lost her life in November 1944 during a night of bombing towards the end of World War 2[7].
In a letter dated February 28, 1944, Gerhart Hauptmann, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, thanked Fritz Bühler & Söhne for agreeing to “send him 60 bottles of your Winklerberg”. He “likes drinking this natural Baden wine very much and it tastes very well. The Bordeauxs of today do not always have the beautiful simple truth of their vineyard. My stays in Baden-Baden have taught me this.” And finally Gerhart Hauptmann notes in this letter: “That I will continue to drink wine for a very long time is not to be assumed at the age of eighty-one, but I ask you to sponsor me again from time to time.”
On June 6, 1946, about 2 years later, Gerhart Hauptmann died in Agentendorf in Lower Silesia from where he wrote this letter. He was an important German dramatist and writer and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. Apparently he was also a lover and connoisseur of good wines. It is interesting to note that Gerhart Hauptmann addressed his letter to “Herr” Bühler, i.e. obviously to Dr. Herbert Bühler or Fritz Bühler, while in these years the widow Amalie Bühler was in charge of the business.
In 1942 and 1953, Dr. Herbert Buehler expanded the property and purchased additional vineyards[8]. The grape varieties Weißer Burgunger (Pinot Blanc) and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are typical for the famous Ihringer Winklerberg. Dr. Herbert Buehler discontinued the wine trade in 1962. In 1967, he leased his own cultivation and use of the vineyards to the Ihringer winegrowers’ cooperative. In 1979, he and his wife Else sold the winery in Ihringen, the vineyard in Staufen, and the property in Freiburg to his nephew Dr. Wolfgang Buehler, who continued the lease agreement with the winegrowers’ cooperative.
In 2014, the vineyards in Ihringen remained with the Buehler family were leased to the Freiherr von Gleichenstein winery. With this lease agreement, the cultivation of the Buehler family’s vineyards in the Kaiserstuhl region of Ihringen was secured for many more years. The labels now read the inception “Freiherr von Gleichenstein – Ihringer Winklerberg“ with the addition „The grapes for this wine come from the vineyard of the Dr. Wolfgang Buehler family.”
In 2017, Dr. Wolfgang Buehler decided to set up a new winery on Mallorca, which his son Dr. Thomas Buehler took over in 2019. With Son Amaret the Buehler family now operates around 11 ha of wines. In 2021, exactly 225 years after the first reference to a winegrowing activity by of the Buehler family in 1976, the first wine from Son Amaret was launched on the market.
Location[edit]
The vineyards of Son Amaret are located between Fleanitx and Manacor in the east of Mallorca. This region is plain and the soil and climate give the wine a particular and recognizable taste.
Wines produced[edit]
Son Amaret currently produces a variety of white and rose wines[9]. Among the white wines, Son Amaret sells Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viogner. The Chardonnay has a ripe fruit and is full-bodied with a subtle acidity due to the Mediterranean climate. The Sauvignon Blanc combines opulent fruit with the freshness of a white wine to provide a rounded balance. Son Amaret’s Viogner retained an insider-status due to its longer maturity and full body. With regards to Rose wines, the Rosado curve combines Syrah and Tempranillo, providing a fruity and harmonious taste. The Syrah Rosado is bottled in a provincial bottle and differentiates due to its subtle color, seductive aroma and soft taste touch.
