Sondra Lee
Sondra Lee, born on September 30, 1930 in Newark, New Jersey, is a dancer, actress, director and teacher. She has been active in American and European theater for over fifty years.[1][2]
Early Life
Sondra was a sickly child growing up in Newark, New Jersey. She had regular bouts of pneumonia, and was given growth hormone shots because she was so tiny, her adult height being only four foot ten and a half. At the age of 10 her aunt took her to see the Ballet Russe starring the great ballerina Alexandra Danilova. After the performance she managed to get backstage to meet Danilova, starting a correspondence with the star. Madame Danilova invited Sondra to audition, and she was awarded a scholarship, but her mother refused to let her accept it. Instead Danilova arranged for Sondra to attend professional-level classes at Studio 61 in Carnegie Hall, where she found herself at the barre with stars such as André Eglevsky and Igor Youskevitch.
