Sonia Sabri (born Kundi) MBE is a multi-award-winning dance artist, choreographer and movement director and Artistic Director of Sonia Sabri Company. She is one of the world’s leading Kathak dance artists, creating work that spans from the presentation of classical roots of Kathak to explorations of contemporary approaches, her productions reflect an appreciation of Western and Eastern cultures.
In 2022, Sonia was the associate choreographer for Wondrous Stories to launch Birmingham Festival Commonwealth Games, and for The Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Sonia Sabri Company is an Associate Artist at Birmingham Hippodrome and Sonia is Creative Resident at The Curve.
Sabri visited Finland in the spring of 2009, accompanied by her troupe, which includes a band led by her husband, Ustad Sarvar Sabri. The band features tabla and sitar players as well as vocalists. The dance troupe was founded in 2002. Sabri lives in Wolverhampton.
Background and Career Early Beginnings: Started training in Kathak at age six at the Mac, Birmingham in Birmingham.
Distinct Style: Blends traditional North Indian Kathak roots with contemporary Western and Eastern movement approaches. She follows the Lahore Gharana style of Kathak and has trained under Teachers like Nahid Siddiqui
Key Achievements: Choreographed for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games and received a Medal for OBE for services to dance.
Notable Works: Created acclaimed touring productions like Roshni, exploring themes of healing, light, and dark.
