Sonic Robo Blast 2, abbreviated as SRB2 is a 1999 platforming video game created by Johnathan Wallbank and AJ Freda, known online under the aliases of Sonikku and SSNTails; it is a fan game based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series by Sega and follows the events of the original Sonic Robo Blast, released in February 1998 and follows Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as they stop the Bad Guy from harnessing the energy of a mysterious asteroid.

Robo Blast 2 is closely inspired by the original Sonic games for the Sega Genesis and attempts to recreate it in 3D, although it also takes inspiration from later games such as Sonic Adventure; Robo Blast 2 has received praise from critics and is notable for its troubled development cycle, still receiving updates as of 2021.

Gameplay

Robo Blast 2 is a 3D platformer that takes inspiration from various games in the series, mainly the original four Sonic games for the Genesis; the player has the option at the start of the game to play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles; Sonic is given his homing attack from Sonic Adventure and has the fastest speed of any character, Tails is given his flight but gets tired if flying for too long, and Knuckles is able to glide slowly down.

Zones are organized in the style of Sonic 3D Blast, where the third act is a boss fight; contrary to many 3D Sonic games, Robo Blast 2 is designed to be non-linear in nature with several ways of reaching the goal; currently, there are eight zones for the player to go through, although two more zones, Dark City Zone and Grand Eggship Zone, are planned to be added in a future update.

Development

Robo Blast 2 is being developed by Sonic Team Junior, founded by Johnathan "Sonikku" Wallbank and AJ "SSNTails" Freda.[1] Robo Blast 2 was initially developed using the same engine as Robo Blast 1, however in 2000 it was changed to use the id Tech 1 engine, more commonly known as the Doom engine due to its use in the 1993 first-person shooter Doom.[1] As of 2002 and 2009, Sonikku and SSNTails are no longer working on the project.[1] According to one of the level designers, Rob Tisdell, there are around 5–10 people working at once.[1]

Reception

Robo Blast 2 has received positive reviews from various media critics; Spidol of Abandonia Reloaded scored the game 5/5 stars saying "Sonic Robo Blast 2 may very well be the greatest fan-made Sonic game ever made! Well, it might have some competition when some other fine fans release the HD remakes of the original Genesis Sonic Classics!".[2] Screen Rant stated "Overall, the project is one of pure passion and is an incredible homage to 2D Sonic gameplay through a 3D lens."[3] Dominic Tarason of Rock, Paper, Shotgun wrote about the game saying "it manages to be a fun, breezy 3D platformer that alternates well between precision and breakneck speed, arguably better than most of Sonic's official 3D outings. Like 8-Bit Deathmatch, it has spawned its own talented mod scene on the SRB2 forums".[4]

Bryan Menegus for Gizmodo wrote about the game's troubled development time, stating "After almost two decades, the game isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving."[1]

The development cycle has been the subject of various jokes by the community; the reveal trailer for version 2.2 having the text "when it's done" appear at the end.[5] In 2019, Robo Blast 2 was awarded the Mardeth Award from Cacowards for its long development cycle.[6]
