Sonika is a female Vocaloid released for the Vocaloid 2 software by Zero-G Ltd.

    Development

Zero-G felt that a young, carefree singer would make for an overall interesting VOCALOID, providing the fresh and innocent voice that professional singers do not provide. She had several demo songs released. It was stated in the live stream for later released Vocaloids "Dex" and "Daina" that Sonika was an experiment.[1]

Sonika also had a Chinese version produced of her software and distributed by E-Capsule Co. Ltd in Taiwan. The Chinese edition came with new boxart. Users can choose to use the original English or Traditional Chinese interface.[2]

Sound on Sound Magazine rated the product as 4 stars out of 5. It also stated that in its opinion her vocals seem best for "bubblegum pop"[3] She managed to rise to 13th position on the top products of 2011 sold by Zero-G.[4] In 2012, she was in 19th place and the no.35 spot in 2014.[5][6]

    Competition

Zero-G held two competitions related to Sonika. The first was a fanart based competition where fans were given the chance to win a copy of Sonika, or another Zero-G Vocaloid.[7] The second was a song competition where users could use her or any other Vocaloid to create a song for Sonika. The winning entry was given a chance to win Sonika herself or another Zero-G vocaloid, and the winning entry was also recreated using Sonika's voice as an official promotion by a professional Vocaloid producer.[8]

    Characteristics

Sonika was given a biography by Zero-G and was the first of their Vocaloids to do so. When released for Taiwan, E-Capsule., LTd also gave her a new additional biography.
