Salacnib "Sonny" Molina (born September 12, 1972), also known as Barefoot Nightingale,[1] is a Filipino-American barefoot runner noted for his ability to run races in any distance ranging from half marathon to ultramarathon barefooted.[2][3][4][5] He holds 18 Guinness World Records within the categories of running,[6][7] largest collection, and walking barefoot on Lego bricks.[4][8]

Career[edit]

Molina participates in most of his world-record attempts to raise funds for charities. He is an ambassador for SOLES4SOULS and accepts and donates any usable or new footwear to people in third-world countries.[9][10]

At 21, Molina migrated to the USA and became an orthopedic[3] and podiatry[11] registered nurse at McHenry Centegra hospital in Illinois.[12][5][13][14]

Barefoot Runner[edit]

Molina's journey to running began in 2012 when some friends from California challenged him to run a marathon. He accepted, starting with 5Ks, 10Ks, and two half-marathons.[2][11][5]

In 2014, Molina participated in a barefoot race in the Philippines.[12] In 2016, he completed three hours, five minutes, and 40 seconds, with his place in 1,861st, in the ThedaCare Half Marathon by completing the 13.1 miles barefoot.[15]

Molina holds 10 Guinness World Records for running half marathons, marathons, and ultra-marathons barefoot.[4][16][17]

According to Fox Cities Marathon officials, he set three Guinness World Records for most half marathons completed in a month by a male, most half marathons completed in a month barefoot, and most half marathons run barefoot on consecutive days.[2]

On October 1, 2020, Molina broke his records in St. Cloud, MN, after running 20 half marathons barefoot over 20 consecutive days. His previous record was 17 half marathons over 17 consecutive days.[7]

Molina is a Guinness World Record holder for the farthest distance walking barefoot on LEGO bricks.[16][18][14] This effort raised $1,225 to buy LEGO toy sets for underprivileged families during the holiday season. Along with the event, he also accepted donations of LEGO sets from the community.[4]

In November 2019 in Illinois, Molina walked barefoot on a 19-meter U-shaped course filled with LEGO bricks for 2 hours for 200-course laps and more than 3,800 meters.[1][19] In 2020, he updated his previous Guinness Book Record and covered 5,082 meters barefoot on LEGO bricks.[8] According to Guinness' website, Molina partnered with the Rotary Club Clearing House in Woodstock for a LEGO walking attempt and raised money for Cancer Warrior and Toys for Tots.[20][7] His recent record occurred in May 2021, when he walked 8,898.9 meters across LEGO bricks barefoot.[21][22]
