Sonny Zulu (born 9 February 1977) is a Zambian banker who is the chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank Zambia. [1][2]He was appointed to the position in 2021 and won the Zambian bank executive of the year award in 2021. He became the first Zambian to hold the post.[3][4][5]
Career
Before being appointed as Standard Chartered Bank Zambia CEO, Sonny was the Head and managing director of the Consumer, Private and Business Banking business at Standard Chartered Bank in the UAE.[6] He then served as the Regional Head of Strategic Transformation, Alliance and Performance Management for Africa and the Middle East at Standard Chartered Bank.[7]
He was recognized as one of the top 40 Fintechs in 2016, becoming the first Zambian to be listed.[8] He led the transformation of a previously underperforming business into a top-performing business achieving growth. The business progressed to win the prestigious Standard Chartered Global Business Performance Award in 2017.[9] It also won the same Business Performance Award in 2014 and the Operating Profit Global Award in the same year. In the prior year, Standard Chartered won the Achievers League and the Income Breakthrough Global Awards.[10]
Education
Zulu holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and has a degree in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing from the University of Zambia. He is currently pursuing a PhD from Golden Gate University.[11]
Personal life
Zulu is co-founder and co-owner of Air Mafuta Aviation services, a supplier of aviation fuel. The company was founded in 2009. He is married with three children.[4]
