Sony Chan (born 1975) is an award-winning French comedian, radio and television presenter.

Biography[edit]

Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1975.[1] They moved to France with their parents in 1987, at the age of 11.[1] The family settled in Alsace.[2]

Career[edit]

Chan hosted a television segment on the show Comment ça va bien! on the channel France 2 from 2013-15.[3] In 2015 they appeared on the show Folie passagère.[3]
In 2019, Chan used their voice to speak out about the protests in Hong Kong on France 24.[4]

Gender[edit]

Chan is non-binary - they were born male, but appears as female.[3] In a 2012 article, when asked about the pronouns others should use, they told the interviewer that people should "follow their heart" and use either Mr or Miss accordingly.[5]

November 4, 2015, the French Television Show 《Folie passagère [fr]》 played the Cantonese vision 《On va s'aimer》, which sang by Sony Chan. The lyrics of the song included the criticized words about Liang Zhenying who was the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and was discussed by Hong Kong citizens on the internet.[7]

In March 2018, Sony Chan did "The Mad Heart Show" at the Fringe Club of Hong Kong Central.

Early Life[edit]

In the college, Sony Chan majored in architecture. 2001, after Sony Chan graduated, he went back to Hong Kong and then worked in a French company. However, Sony Chan was dreamed to be a movie star since he was a child; so that he none stop participating in different auditions. However, Chan is not a lucky dog, and he totally failed. In 2002, Sony Chan was laid off by his company. Thus, he decided to return to France and became a fashion designer. In 2011, after Sony Chan won a stand-up comedy contest, a small French Radio Station contexted and asked Chan to host a program called La Saga de Miss Hong Kong. This is the turning point of Sony Chan's life. After this, Sony Chan started to get more and more jobs, and also he became more and more popular.[8]
