Sophia Urista

Sophia Urista is an American singer, songwriter and musician best known for appearing on The Voice (U.S. season 11) on NBC Television where she was chosen by Miley Cyrus and competed for several episodes until the elimination round. She has performed on numerous recordings including John Wick: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, the seasonal anthology from her appearance on The Voice[1] and as a featured artists, as she did with Scott Tixier.

Life and career[edit]

Hailing originally from Detroit, Sophia graduated from the University of Michigan and moved to New York City at the age of 21. She is said to have moved to New York to pursue acting with only $700 and without the support of her family. She began her musical career two years later after winning a karaoke contest.[2]

After performing at open mics and other events Sophia approached famed singer/songwriter duo Ashford and Simpson and producer Quincy Jones who agreed to mentor her. Over the next couple years she continued to perform in many clubs and at festivals around New York such as the The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival being backed by her own bands and appearing as a featured singer.

In 2016 he was selected to perform on The Voice where she garnered the attention of both Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys performing the John Lennon song Come Together.[3] Although she was eliminated from the contest after several rounds she has continued to have success, leading bands such as the rock & roll trio "The VeeVees" with Andrea Belfiore on drums and songwriter Garrett Cillo on guitar and vocals as well as. She has also had residencies at the world renowned Sleep No More at The McKittrick Hotel & the Box, both in New York City.

She currently performs as a solo artist and with several bands including "Rebel and the Titan" and "Brass Against"[4] in the New York City area and on tours of the U.S.. Sophia is also known as the MC at a burlesque show on the Bowery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan at a club called Duane Park NYC where she is currently in residency.
