Sophie Brooks is an English and American film director, writer, and producer known for The Boy Downstairs and Oh, Hi!.
Biography
Sophie Brooks was born in London to Katharine Brooks and Film Producer Paul Brooks.[1] Growing up with her father in the film industry sparked an early interest in storytelling. She was held back in elementary school and had to repeat third grade, partially due to her dyslexia.[2] In 2013, she graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Film and Television.[3]
Career
Her first feature film, The Boy Downstairs, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017.[4] She struggled with another project for a few years before the COVID-19 Lockdown, where she was challenged by her agent to make a low-budget, single-location film, She then started writing the script for Oh, Hi! with help from Molly Gordon, who would go on to star in the film.[5] Eight years after her first feature film debut, Oh, HI! premiered January 26, 2025, at the Sundance Film Festival.[6] The film would go on to have a limited theatrical release later that same year.[7] Both of her feature films were produced by her brother, David Brooks.[8]
Styles and Themes
Many of Brooks' films center around the complications that come with modern-day heterosexual dating. Her films mix the characters of a rom-com with the heightening and humor of a dark comedy to respectfully satirize topics of "situationships" and dealing with ex-partners. She has said that she encourages actors to improvise in her films in an effort for the performances to feel natural.[2] Both of her feature films have female protagonists in their 20s, and she writes from her own experiences of dating in New York.[5]
